By now you’ve probably heard of the service YouTube Red. But what is it? How does it work? And how does it benefit creators? In today’s post, we’ll answer all of those questions and even give you tips on how to leverage your watch-time into more earnings!

What’s YouTube Red?

YouTube Red is a relatively new service offered by YouTube. In exchange for about $10 per month (varies by device), you gain access to the entire YouTube library of content ad-free, YouTube music, and exclusive YouTube Red content that’s updated daily. In addition, you can save videos to your chosen device for offline viewing.

You said Ad-free, how does that help support creators who make money from ads?

This part gets a bit more complicated. YouTube Red is a subscription-based service, but that doesn’t mean all of that money goes to YouTube. The percentage split stays the same as with Adsense in fact.¬†YouTube takes a fixed 45% cut from the initial subscription amount and distributes 55% to content owners based on watch time. This means that watch-time is now more than ever one of the most important metrics you have. Increasing your watch-time is a must if you’re looking for both a more engaged audience and more revenue.

How do I increase my watch-time?

While increasing watch-time is no easy task, here are a few tips to get you started. First, you’re going to want to get rid of that long animated intro. Most viewers will decide whether or not to keep watching your video within the first 15 seconds of your video. Hooking your viewers early is key.

Second, you’ll want to head over to your YouTube Analytics to view your watch-time graphs. Each video has one so it’s great for figuring out what parts of your videos people like the least. Look for trends and make changes as you make new videos to keep people watching for longer. Be patient since this is not an easy task.
